I grew up reading The Babysitters Club series. You know, those books from the eighties that followed around a group of best friends who started their own babysitting company? Genius! They held meetings once a week, hung out and babysat the neighborhood kids. Plus they made money, lots of it. I loved those books.
Well, my cousin, who is so close to me in age, I often think of her as my sister, was into reading the Sweet Valley Twins series. She urged me to try them. And as classic Erika does, to this day, didn't want change. So I kind of ignored the recommendation, for a bit.
Then one day, I was bored. I had finished all of my current Babysitters Club books and had nothing left to read. Then I saw it, on the corner of my bookshelf, my cousin Nicole, had left a copy of her beloved Sweet Valley Twins series. I scooped it up. it was book #5 Sneaking Out. I read it in one night and was hooked. The series follows the lives of twin sisters Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield in junior high school. Elizabeth is a bookworm, writer and abides to the rules her parents set down. Jessica, on the other hand, hates homework, loves rock and roll and being popular. She is the rebellious one. And she quickly became my favorite. In Sneaking Out, she well, she sneaks out of her house at night to go to a concert her parents said she couldn't go to. And well, all kinds of havoc ensue. There's plenty of drama, lying and adventure all rolled into one. Of course I was hooked. I thanked my cousin and started reading the rest of the books in order after that. By the way, this all went down in the 4th grade. I loved reading then, still do now.
OK, so by now you must be wondering where is the bit about the purple eyeshadow and how does that tie in to this article? Well, Jessica Wakefield was also part of the popular group in her school. It was comprised of her best friends and they nicknamed themselves The Unicorns. One of the rules of the club was that each member had to wear one article of purple everyday to be recognized. Beauty, I'm sure would also work- be it lilac nail polish or maybe some purple eyeshadow? So of course, purple quickly became my favorite color too.
Hence the purple eyeshadow. And seeing it trending recently on the fashion runways for Spring 2018...
I couldn't help being reminded of Jessica Wakefield and her Unicorn Club posse! ;)
